Around the Onelove office (at home) -Isolation, restrictions and lockdown edition.
In times like these, we find comfort and normalcy in others. Their habits, their thought processes.. Anything to help us work through and understand the situation that we find ourselves in. We checked in with resident Onelove figureheads Ant Celestino and Tyson O’Brien to see how they are coping with office life at home and to ask them what they’ve learnt during isolation.
Ant, you have been a pillar of the Onelove office for decades, consistently assisting in the growth of the company, the sub-labels and it’s artists - tell us how iso-life is treating you? And what have you learnt from this experience?
COVID19 puts every aspect of your life under the microscope, finding the flaws and cracks in both your personal and professional life, but it’s been really eye opening forced into a situation of removing the regular office environment for such an extended period. I’m a bit of an introvert so it didn't take long getting comfortable in “isolation”, (despite the issues of bringing kids into my new workplace or should i say - bringing my work into their new school environment!) but I’m grateful I had a big task to keep my occupied - keeping the business going with a renewed focus on recordings after all our touring and events were shelved. It opened the door to give more attention to some projects I’d been toying with, like Tyson’s You Do You imprint, restarting our Hell Beach and WVS labels, and even producing my own music again.
At the start there was the added complication of fear and uncertainty which melted away once the virus numbers reduced but when we went back into our current more strict lock-downs (in Melbourne) we were already working from home so I had a better understanding of my capabilities under these conditions, which meant that COVID anxiety hasn’t interfered as much.
But most of all what I've gained from this experience has been how to prioritise what time is given to certain tasks and a new understanding of how important it is what I give my attention to. While online meetings have removed the chance for those casual office encounters that add to the overall creativity of our workplace, they've also given me more time to focus on tasks that need doing right now. While it’s been great to have a goal, even as simple as “keep it all afloat”, the downside is now i'm at work all the time - so finding balance between work and non-work life is now the biggest challenge i’m grappling with!
Back when we could work at the office..
Tyse, you have been the party-starter, the jet-setter and most recently, the new head of dance sub-label You Do You, responsible for serving some of the finest dance tracks the world has to offer. Tell us, how is iso-life treating you? And what have you learnt from this experience?
Life has changed dramatically for me, i can't remember the last time i’ve been in one city for so long. I also can’t believe I've gone 6 months without a show to actual people! I really do miss the connection you have with an audience and also the incredible feeling and energy you get being on stage.
I’ve really focused on making music and also growing my You Do You label. This down time has enabled me to find so many amazing songs & incredibly talented artists. Having this focus has really helped me through this period.
