Presenting Bloc-Chain and their debut single 'Hunter'
The new music project from Melbourne producers Josh Potter and Jayden McGrath. Drifting away from the progressive rock and metal worlds into the realm of electronic dance, Bloc-Chain arrived with twisted aplomb. Their debut on onelove is titled “Hunter” and integrates tech house tropes into a modern love story (of kinds), heavy on fetish fantasy and jaw breaking lyrical attitude.
We sat down with them on the eve of their new release to discuss life and their new direction in music.
Congratulations on releasing Hunter guys. Can you shed some light into the process behind the production of this debut dance single? Thanks, we’ve always loved creating sounds, loops, pads etc, we joked about writing some edm one day and thought it would be a good challenge for us...our production method is a pretty simple process, Jay or myself will have an idea, then will just send it back and forth to each other and put our little touches/tweaks on it “Hunter” was born with Jay having a vocal cut and bass line and it morphed from there.
You both come from a progressive rock and metal background, performing in bands like Figures, Zenith and Conjurer, what caused such a drastic departure from one genre to another? I've always loved dance and it was the 1st real genre I got into as a kid...buying “Wild and Ministry of sound” CD compilations, my dad buying me some 1200’s and a pioneer 600 mixer, DJ’ing at parties etc so it’s always been there lying in wait...same for Jay, he has such a big love for all styles of music epically world music genres and has from a very young age...we’ve played in bands with more traditional instruments for a long time and just wanted a new and exciting challenge, the EDM world has been such a joy to dive into and we’re really loving every minute of it.
The vocals in this track sound as though they definitely have some progesive rock elements to create a type of hybrid tech house sound. Was that front of mind during the production process?
To be honest there has been no real intentional motion towards writing the vocals at this point. Coming from a rock and metal background definitely influences the way the vocals are approached but I try to write completely on intuition and then edit the lines and write the lyrics from that point on ! Not being completely immersed in this genre helps the vibe naturally be a little more obscure so we’re excited to keep learning and writing new material !
There are real S&M fight club fantasy vibes on this on this, what is this song about?
Fight club is one of my favourite movies! Haha ! I can see where you're coming from, this is an interesting interpretation that does in fact hit home in some ways. The lyrics reveal the dark side of sex and consensual exploration . Everyone is scared to talk about it or portray that image unless they are alone so I thought why not just put it in a song. This is in no way saying that being abusive to your partner is acceptable or should ever be done. I’m just saying people have kinks and when they are explored in a safe and controlled manner it can be fun and it may even keep you together .What’s on the horizon for Bloc-Chain, where do you want to take it?
Bloc-Chain is a freedom of speech for us. We intend to keep writing from the heart and exploring the world of EDM. I’m sure the sound will evolve and whatever opportunities are presented to us will be explored ! Who knows what the future holds!
