JDG- Reminiscing & Remixing
In an industry where producer / DJ’s are found around every corner, JDG (a.k.a. Jordan Griffiths) is breaking through the barriers with every release. His career has spanned across multiple genres and he has performed to packed clubs and festivals all over Australia and America.
Ahead of 2020 we thought we would sit down with him and talk to him about his process, and the good ol’ days.
1. Thanks so much for having a chat to us Jordan, congratulations on your recent remix for Hood Rich which came out recently. How much of the original production do you use as reference before starting a remix, or do you prefer to just use the VOX and start from scratch?
Hey guys no worries, thanks super stoked with the record! When doing remixes it usually starts off with me dragging in the vocal and working around it & really experimenting with how I would use the vocal myself, sometimes I pretend to myself that the vocal was sent to me for an original and just go all out as it’s an original. I think it’s always a good idea to really push yourself to make the remix totally different from the original, no one wants to hear a remix that sounds 80% like the original haha.
2. What process do you prefer more creating your own original music or remixing?
I’d definitely say original music, Having a blank canvas and to just throw all your wacky ideas and form it into something unique really is one of the best feelings ever.
3. Now for the hard questions; If you had to listen to 3 songs from the past 10 years everyday for the rest of your life what songs would they be?
J. Cole - High For Hours
Tchami - Adieu
Room 5 Ft Oliver Cheatham - Make Luv
4. You have toured pretty much everywhere in your career what has been your absolute favourite performance and why?
Damn that’s always the hardest question hahah! I honestly don’t think I could pick one but here’s a few favourites:
Sound Nightclub - Los Angeles: Just remember having such a good crew there at my first show in LA crowd was up for anything, i played a super groovy set and by the end of it i went a little harder a the place was just vibing!
Stereosonic 2015 - Sydney :Played early on the second stage with Samual James and 10mins into our set the crowd filled up insanely quick one of the best vibes ever!
Tramp 2017 - Melbourne : Was my first time playing at this iconic Melbourne venue, a whole heap of good mates and played a collection of old/ new music from myself was a night to remember!
5. Now that we’ve looked back, tell us what does 2020 hold for you?
Music Music Music!!! I’m constantly writing and pushing myself to release the best music possible, and best believe my upcoming work is easily my best work haha. Also looking forward to some great shows/ festivals and reaching some places I haven't been yet. My team at Vita have locked in some awesome shows so look out for them.
